The LungSmart Team had a wonderful time at the Indigenous Literacy Day celebrations held at South Hedland Library. Thanks to the generous support from the Pilbara Metals community grant, we were able to bring 100 copies of our new children’s book, “Let’s Stop That Cough,” for every child in attendance.
Indigenous Literacy Day is a vibrant occasion that honors Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, stories, and languages. This year, we were thrilled to join the festivities for the third time, interacting with over 150 attendees, including 85 children and 64 adults, including communities from Yandeyarra, Strelley and Worralong Remote Community school.
The event provided a fantastic platform to connect with families and share essential information about healthy lungs. Our team set up a fun and engaging activity where children could paint canvas lung stencil bags, which helped convey the important message about lung health. We took the opportunity to discuss with the kids and their families where their lungs are, their function, and why keeping them healthy is so crucial. The day was filled with creativity and joy, and it was heartening to see everyone so enthusiastic about learning and celebrating together.
It was a memorable event, and we’re looking forward to future celebrations as this incredible gathering continues to grow. A big thank you to everyone involved for making it such a positive and engaging experience in the Pilbara.
