Brad and his son Thomas connected with CFWA because Thomas wasn’t sure what direction to take after finishing high school. Following a clinic appointment where the CFWA goal-setting subsidy was mentioned, Brad and Thomas came into the CFWA office to talk through options and learn more about available support.
During their visit, Brad spoke about Thomas’s uncertainty around post-school pathways. Thomas was open about feeling unsure of what he wanted to do next, beyond wanting to work towards a stable and well-paying job. While he had been involved in sport and community activities, including basketball, he wasn’t confident about how his skills and interests might translate into future study or work options.
CFWA supported to Thomas to access the goal-setting subsidy to access career counselling and assisted him to book an appointment with an experienced career counsellor who specialises in working with young people.
The session helped Thomas explore his strengths, interests, and transferable skills, and consider a range of possible pathways, including TAFE, university, apprenticeships, and alternative options. They also worked through practical considerations such as job demand, future opportunities, and how different pathways might align with Thomas’s values and goals.
After the appointment, Thomas appeared more optimistic and reassured, with greater clarity around potential pathways and confidence in his next steps.
