CF Futures

Since 2014, when for the first time more than half of Australians with cystic fibrosis (CF) were adults, the CF community has seen significant change. Advances in care and treatment have led to longer lives and improved outcomes, but they’ve also brought new challenges. We now have a diverse community with increasingly complex needs, emerging comorbidities, and a growing desire for connection and digital support.

Global antimicrobial resistance poses a particular risk to people with CF, many of whom live with persistent infections. Comorbidities continue to emerge with age, and while current medications are improving health for many, not everyone is eligible or able to tolerate them. Research is ongoing, with the goal of supporting all people with CF, regardless of age, genetics, health status, or comorbidities.

We recognise that the needs of people with CF are evolving. The CF Futures resources were developed in collaboration with our community and hospital MDTs to address three key themes: My Financial Wellbeing, My Relationships, and My Body. These resources combine lived experience, expert insights, and practical tools to help people with CF navigate this new era.

As you explore these resources, we encourage you to seek support tailored to your unique situation and continue working alongside your care team to adapt your CF management as needed.

I wish I had a crystal ball and was able to foresee that I did in fact have a future.

First Orkambi and then Trikafta really did help us see light at the end of the tunnel. I’d say it was life changing for us. We used to have a constant dread of our child’s future health, the age “37” hung over me and I always felt sad he wouldn’t see old age. Modulators have made us believe there is a much more realistic chance of him living much longer, thanks to the extended life expectancy. It’s not something I worry about anymore.
